At my hospital a trial is in progress with patients that have a detailed medical history are given their own flash drive. This flash drive has all the patients up to date info that doctors can access and review without having the parents go through the child's history. The drive is updated each time they come to the hospital and the parents can access the information at home. Three separate passwords are used. So if the flash drive is lost no one will be able to access it. One password for the doctors to review information, one for an "administrator" to change info and one for the parents to view the info at home and are unable to make any changes to the documents.

I think in the future all patients will have a personal flash drive, not just patients with significant medical history.
